The history of the Kocbek Oil Mill dates back to 1929, when Alojz Kocbek and his wife Antonija decided to start producing the best quality oil. Knowledge and experience were first passed down to their son Anton, who later turned everything over to his son Gorazd, who now represents the third generation in the Kocbek family. Gorazd wishes to continue the family tradition and in that way preserve the strong family name and reputation and the highest quality.
Gorazd is today producing a wide range of highest quality oils: classical pumpkin seed oil, cold pressed pumpkin seed oil, rapeseed oil, cold pressed sunflower oil, walnut oil and recently also an oil mixture of pumpkin seed oil and olive oil (olive oil is made by the Lisjak family) which doesn’t unite only flavours but also health benefits of both oils.
The Kocbek pumpkin seed oil is the most traditional product of their range (interesting fact: first pumpkin seed oil was produced in Fram, Slovenia, in 1750). It is dark green and has a deep intense nutty taste which melts and becomes buttery when combined with other ingredients. Gorazd is very proud of the fact that he is one of the very few producers worldwide who still produce this oil in the traditional way and by using strictly local well controlled pumpkin seeds instead of using cheap pumpkin seeds from Asia. He is also still using the antique mills of his grandfather assuring that the quality of the oil is always uncompromised and ordered oils freshly pressed. You can feel it on flavour! “I was born into a family who loves our territory and I am proud of our high quality products without any compromises. I am happy that we are producing something which is not yet so widely known, but has a great potential,” says Gorazd. He is also glad to see his oil being well accepted by some great chefs who are using it as their secret (and sometimes also less secret) ingredient.
Pumpkin seed oil doesn’t only have an exceptional very intense flavour which gives a completely new dimension to savoury and sweet dishes, but it also has fantastic health benefits.
Have you tried it yet? If not, why don’t you order some today to explore a fantastic new flavour?
